Disney Secretariat Movie Private Screening & Fun Facts

by - 9/13/2010 07:59:00 PM

During BlogHer 2010, I attended a private screening of the new upcoming Disney movie Secretariat, which will be released this October 2010.

Secretariat Screening

After the screening there was cocktail reception where attendees met with director Mark Ciardi.

During the reception I asked Mark why he chose to make a movie based on the real life events of a "Horse". Mark explained that while the horse himself was amazing being a Triple Crown winner, the background story of Penny Chenery and the journey she went through was what appealed to him. After seeing the movie I truly understand what Mark meant.

While I can't give you a full review until after the it's release, I'll tell you now this movie is a MUST see movie. The story line is inspiring and will appeal to all family members. I KNOW after seeing this movie you'll love it

Based on the remarkable true story, "Secretariat" chronicles the spectacular journey of the 1973 Triple Crown winner. Housewife and mother Penny Chenery (Diane Lane) agrees to take over her ailing father’s Virginia-based Meadow Stables, despite her lack of horse-racing knowledge.

Against all odds, Chenery—with the help of veteran trainer Lucien Laurin (John Malkovich)—manages to navigate the male-dominated business, ultimately fostering the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years and what may be the greatest racehorse of all time.

Fun Facts:
  • In 1973, Secretariat became the first U.S. Triple Crown champion in 25 years, setting race records that still stand today in the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes.
  • Penny Chenery, now 87, is an integral resource in the making of the film. She also appears as an extra in one of the film’s scenes.
  • Director Randall Wallace, whose directorial credits include “We Were Soldiers,” is the Oscar®- and Golden Globe®-nominated screenwriter of “Braveheart.”

  11. I'd love to win because I actually remember the excitement in 1973! The country was in turmoil and it seemed that it was something that everyone- even non race fans, could get excited about! Thanks for the memory!
