Our First Summer with New York YMCA Camp

It's almost time for public schools to let out for summer vacation. Usually during the summer my son either goes to summer school or just hangs out with me in the city. But as he's gotten older, I felt he should have more summer fun with kids his own age. So last year I signed my son up for YMCA summer camp!

Our First Summer with New York YMCA Camp

Note: Last year I paid for my son's camp session and had no working relationship with the New York YMCA. While the New York YMCA asked me to share their 2015 camp information, I received no compensation. Any personal views expressed are always 100% my own.

Why the YMCA summer camp? Since this was our first time going to camp, I wanted a camp within the city and with an organization I was familiar with. Also the YMCA camps happens in sessions. So if I missed the early sign up, I could still get into a later camp session if they had room. With some camps if you didn't signup in the beginning then your child was out for the rest of the summer.

During my son's time at the Chinatown YMCA, he enjoyed different activities including swimming (pool), arts and crafts, outdoor trips (parks, museums, etc) and lots more including performing arts!

At the end of his summer session, he joined his group on stage to sing a song and do a dance. He had the moves like Jagger!

Both my son and I had a great time at YMCA summer camp last year. While he enjoyed all the activities with his friends, I liked that the camp staff were pleasant to deal with. They answered all my new camp mom questions. Daily.

After having such a good experience, I plan once again to sign my son up for YMCA summer camp. Think your child would also enjoy going to a YMCA camp? The read on to learn more

YMCA Summer Camp Offerings

Day Camp

For children in Kindergarten through 8th grade - Using a fun, hands-on approach, New York YMCA Day Camp provides campers with the opportunity to discover all the wonders of the natural world around them on our 1,150 acres. As they participate in safe, organized, age appropriate activities, campers gain a basic knowledge of ecology and science while developing an appreciation for the environment. Campers also participate in outdoor skills, sports and art & crafts. These structured activities encompass the morning and early afternoon while swimming in our lake is a refreshing end to the day.

All camp activities are progressive and designed to allow each child to see the growth of skills they learn in a fun and safe environment. Younger campers are led through adventurous and fun activities, while older campers have a choice in their activities throughout the day. Each week of day camp will have a special theme, past themes have included: "Time Travelers", "Backpacking Around the World", "Stemology" and "Exploring the Islands."
